Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 45–65 m tall.

Stems: Bark white to bluish gray, smooth throughout, or occasionally flaky at base of trunk.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 8–12.5 cm long, 1.7–3.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–20 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 7–14 mm long, pedicels 1–5 mm long. buds clavate, 4–7 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum hemispherical, apiculate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovules with axile placentation.

Fruit: Fruit cylindrical to campanulate; 4–6 mm long and wide; valves 3–4; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Extensively planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Molokai; and Hawai'i; and seeding naturally in these areas.
